Workshop on Intelligent Narrative Technologies III

Mark Riedl, Dave Roberts, and Arnav Jhala (UC Santa Cruz) will organize the Third Workshop on Intelligent Narrative Technologies, to be held in conjunction with the 5th International Conference on Foundations of Digital Games (FDG) in June 2010.

AAAI Workshop on AI and Fun

Mark Riedl (with Ashwin Ram, Charles Isbell, and Vadim Bulitko) will be organizing a workshop on AI and Fun at the AAAI'10 conference, July 2010 in Atlanta.

Interactive entertainment (aka computer games) has become a dominant force in the entertainment sector of the global economy. The question that needs to be explored in depth: what is the role of artificial intelligence in the entertainment sector? If we accept the premise that artificial intelligence has a role in facilitating the entertainment and engagement of humans, then we are left with new questions:

Brian O'Neill passes his qualifier exam

Brian O'Neill successfully passed his written and oral qualifier exam with no major bumps in the road. He presented on his work toward AI that assists amateur story and machinima creators.

Fourteen Papers in 2009

The Intelligent Narrative Computing group published 14 papers in 2008. This is evidence of some vibrant and exciting research going on including: creativity support tools, machinima, story generation and adaptation, autism, improv theatre, and game AI.

The Entertainment Intelligence Lab investigates computational approaches to creating engaging and entertaining experiences. Some of the problem domains we work on:

  • Artificial intelligence
  • Computer games
  • Storytelling
  • Interactive digital worlds
  • Adaptive media and procedural content generation
  • Believable virtual characters

We focus on computationally "hard" problems that require automation, just-in-time generation, and scalability of personalized experiences.
